Liver failure is severe deterioration in liver function, It is caused by a disorder or substance that damages the liver. Most people have jaundice, feel tired and weak, and lose their appetite.
Acute liver failure is treated as soon as possible because problems (such as bleeding) can develop and worsen quickly. People with acute liver failure are treated in an intensive care unit (ICU) if possible.
Any of a number of long term liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, cancer etc leads to chronic liver failure. Chronic liver conditions tend to progressively destroy liver tissue. Serious chronic liver disease can ultimately lead to a transplant being required.
